Telescope Making Workshop

Workshops offered to middle grade science teachers and students(5th-9th)
Week 1 (July 9-13)Teachers learn how to build a telescope from scratch and the concepts behind the use of a telescope; learn to use astronomy data banks and remote telescopes for authentic astronomy projects; learn to use portable planetarium to support classroom instruction; and interact with astronomers from around the world.

Week 2 (July 16-20)Teachers work with middle grade students to practice teaching concepts and skills covered during the 1st week. This provides an opportunity to practice content knowledge and pedagogy.

Week 3 (July 23-27)Students will learn more about how to use their telescopes and they will work on a specific topic/question in astronomy that interests them using images and image analysis to explore their questions. And they will learn how to create pretty astronomy pictures like the experts.

Tell me about it
Teachers receive : $1000 stipend, 4.5 inch mirror telescope, CEU’s, mentoring during the academic year, funding for classroom activities, sponsored opportunity to present at NCSTA or NSTA. Some travel /lodging for the workshop may be available.
Competitive Application: Limited number of teachers per year are admitted.
